The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of Zimbabwe on the occasion of their Independence Day, reaffirming commitment to deepening bilateral relations and advancing shared African ideals.

In a statement signed by the Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, today, Nigeria joined Zimbabwe in celebrating the historic milestone of April 18, 1980, when the country attained independence after a protracted liberation struggle.

Describing the anniversary as a symbol of resilience and self-determination, Nigeria noted that Zimbabwe’s journey to sovereignty reflects the broader African quest for freedom, dignity, and unity.

The government commended Zimbabwe’s role in promoting regional stability and cooperation, particularly within the frameworks of the African Union and the United Nations. It highlighted Harare’s contributions to peacebuilding, economic collaboration, and multilateral engagement across Southern Africa and beyond.

Nigeria emphasized that both countries share a longstanding relationship rooted in common historical experiences, especially the struggle against colonialism and the pursuit of African liberation. It added that cooperation between the two nations continues to grow in key sectors such as trade, education, agriculture, and cultural exchange.

According to the statement, Abuja remains committed to strengthening diplomatic ties with Zimbabwe through sustained engagement and mutually beneficial partnerships, while also promoting people-to-people connections that reinforce shared identity and continental integration.

Reaffirming its support for Zimbabwe’s continued development, Nigeria expressed optimism about expanding collaboration in areas that foster economic growth, democratic governance, and regional stability.

The Federal Government concluded by wishing Zimbabwe lasting peace, progress, and prosperity as it celebrates another year of independence.
