Today, November 20, 2024, Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating Universal Children’s Day, reaffirming its pledge to protect and promote the rights and well-being of every Nigerian child. The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, led by Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, is championing this cause, emphasizing the government’s dedication to creating a safe and supportive environment for all children.
Nigeria has made significant strides in upholding children’s rights, including:
– Domestication of the Child Rights Act (CRA 2003): All 36 states have adopted this vital legislation, protecting children’s rights under the Nigerian Constitution.
– Implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, 2015: Strengthening policies to shield children from abuse, violence, and exploitation.
– Commitment to the Maputo Protocol: Combating violence against children through legislative reviews and enhanced policies.
– Investment in Safe Education: Allocating over 112 billion Naira to safeguard learning environments.
Despite progress, challenges persist. The Ministry urges collective action to address:
– Child labor and trafficking
– Harmful cultural practices
– Barriers to inclusive education
The Ministry invites stakeholders to participate in the following initiatives :
– 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign (November 25 – December 10, 2024)
– Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children
Nigeria has pledged to strengthen laws, expand child protection services, and invest in evidence-based parenting programs, aligning with African Union standards.
As Nigeria celebrates Universal Children’s Day, let us remember that every child represents our collective future. Together, we can create a society where children’s rights are protected and celebrated.
