In a significant step towards transforming Nigeria’s transportation sector, the Federal Government of Nigeria has launched 15 CNG-powered buses under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI). The initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at easing the burden of fuel subsidy removal and promoting cleaner energy solutions.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Ahmed Alkali, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended the Presidential Committee on CNG Initiative for driving the process to its current stage. He emphasized that the initiative represents a commitment to sustainable growth, economic empowerment, and a greener future for Nigeria. The Ministry of Transportation through the leadership of Senator Alkali has been engaged in activities to stabilize the Nigerian Economy through transportation and related infrastructure.
The 15 CNG-powered buses were handed over to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO). This initiative is expected to reduce transport costs for operators and commuters alike, while also cutting down on carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner and more efficient transportation system.
Speaking in appreciation, Dr. Maitakobi noted that transportation is the backbone of any economy, but many Nigerians have been facing difficulties with rising transportation costs.
The CNG buses, according to Dr. Maitakobi, will provide free transportation to individuals in need, creating a positive impact on communities. He emphasized that CNG is a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, contributing to a greener and more sustainable environment.
Dr. Maitakobi assured the federal government that RTEAN is committed to ensuring the buses are deployed efficiently and effectively. He urged drivers and staff to be dedicated and compassionate, upholding the values of integrity, respect, and service that define their organization.
President Tinubu’s administration has been working tirelessly to implement policies and programs that will drive economic growth, reduce poverty, and create jobs. The PCNGI is one of the strategic initiatives designed to achieve these goals, and it demonstrates the government’s commitment to empowering citizens while transitioning to a cleaner energy economy.
