Nigeria Issues Urgent Advisory to Citizens in Iran and Gulf Countries Amid Rising Tensions

Abuja, February 28, 2026 — The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a travel and safety advisory to Nigerian citizens residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following rising tensions triggered by reported military actions involving Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, and subsequent retaliatory strikes on locations in parts of the Gulf region.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving and volatile security situation in the Middle East, noting the potential for further escalation.

In the statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja,
the Ministry urged Nigerians in Iran and affected Gulf states to exercise heightened caution and adhere strictly to safety guidelines.

Maintain Constant Vigilance:
Nigerians in Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries are advised to remain extremely vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. Citizens are strongly cautioned to avoid strategic locations, including military bases, government facilities, and other sensitive installations that could become flashpoints.

Limit Movement:
The government strongly recommends restricting non-essential travel and movement within affected countries until the security situation stabilizes. Nigerians are also advised to avoid large gatherings, protests, and public demonstrations.

Comply with Local Authorities:
Citizens are urged to strictly adhere to all security and safety directives issued by host country authorities. Cooperation with local law enforcement agencies is essential to ensuring personal safety.

Stay Informed:
The Ministry advised Nigerians to stay updated through reliable international and local news outlets while remaining cautious of misinformation. Citizens are encouraged to rely on official communication channels for verified and critical safety information.

Engage Nigerian Missions:
The Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and missions in neighbouring Gulf countries including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia have been placed on high alert to provide necessary consular assistance and facilitate communication with Nigerian nationals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reassured the public that the safety and well-being of Nigerians abroad remains the Federal Government’s top priority. It added that it will continue to assess developments and provide updates as necessary.
The Government of Nigeria also called on all parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue in the interest of global peace, stability, and coexistence.

In another subsequent press release form the Ministry, Nigeria is deeply concerned about escalating tensions in the Gulf region and urges parties to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue.

The government calls for strict adherence to UN Charter and Geneva Convention principles, emphasizing respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nigeria advocates for non-alignment, multilateralism, and constructive engagement to resolve the crisis.

The government supports diplomatic efforts and initiatives aimed at confidence-building, mediation, and peaceful resolution. Nigeria stands in solidarity with the international community, seeking calm and sustainable peace through diplomacy and respect for international law. The safety of civilians and preservation of international order are top priorities.
