The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Beijing, China, has hosted a special reception in honour of the Nigerian football team that emerged champions at the just-concluded Flames Beijing World Cup tournament, in a move aimed at promoting sports diplomacy and strengthening engagement with Nigerians in the diaspora.

The tournament, an amateur community-focused football competition involving participants from the African diaspora and other international amateur teams in China, saw the Nigerian side record an impressive run to clinch the 2026 title during their maiden participation.

The reception brought together officials of the Nigerian Embassy, members of the Nigerian student community, supporters, and players who represented Nigeria at the competition.

Speaking at the event, embassy officials described the gathering as an opportunity to celebrate the team for displaying discipline, patriotism, resilience, and excellence, which they said projected Nigeria positively on the international stage.

They stressed that the team’s victory went beyond football, noting that the players had become symbols of national unity and positive representation of Nigeria within the international community.

In her remarks, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Beijing, Mrs. Ikerionwu Chiegonu Edith, congratulated the team for what she described as an extraordinary achievement.

According to her, the triumph reflected the resilience and unity associated with the Nigerian spirit, adding that football remains a universal language capable of bringing people together across cultures and continents.

She commended the players for their dedication and sacrifices throughout the competition and assured them of the Embassy’s continued support for initiatives that promote Nigeria’s image and strengthen relations among Nigerians in China.

Responding on behalf of the team, the captain expressed appreciation to the Embassy for supporting the players and recognising their achievement. He described the victory as historic, noting that it marked Nigeria’s first participation and triumph in the competition.

The team’s coach also acknowledged the support received from the Embassy, assistant coaches, medical volunteers, supporters, and members of the Nigerian community in Beijing. He admitted that there were organisational shortcomings during the tournament’s opening ceremony but pledged improved coordination in future outings.
Embassy officials further urged Nigerians resident in China to maintain regular communication with the mission, especially on immigration and passport-related matters, to avoid avoidable consular challenges.

Also speaking at the event, a representative from the Office of the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Raymond Na’anlep Delmut, commended the Embassy for promoting citizen engagement and celebrating Nigerian excellence abroad. He also presented one of his authored books to the Embassy leadership as part of efforts to encourage intellectual and cultural diplomacy among Nigerians overseas.

The event highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to using sports diplomacy, youth engagement, and cultural interaction as tools for strengthening bilateral relations and projecting a positive national image internationally.

The statement was signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
