The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic collapse of the Rubaya Coltan Mine in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which reportedly claimed the lives of more than 200 people and left many others injured.
In a statement signed on Thursday by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the DRC, particularly to the families of the victims affected by the devastating incident.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, speaking on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, described the incident as a profound tragedy and extended sympathy to those injured and the affected communities. He also prayed for the quick recovery of the wounded.
According to reports, the mine collapse followed heavy rainfall in the area and primarily affected artisanal miners and nearby residents. The Nigerian government noted with concern the circumstances surrounding the disaster, highlighting the severe humanitarian challenges faced by vulnerable communities in resource-rich regions and the dangers associated with unsafe and informal mining activities.
Nigeria affirmed its solidarity with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and commended local authorities and emergency response teams for their efforts in recovering victims, providing medical care to the injured, and ensuring the safety of affected populations.
“The thoughts and prayers of the Government and people of Nigeria are with the Government and people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at this difficult time,” the statement said.
