Nigeria, China Reaffirm Commitment to Stronger Bilateral Ties, Expand Strategic Cooperation

Nigeria and China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with renewed emphasis on deepening diplomatic engagement, enhancing institutional cooperation, and expanding people-to-people exchanges.
The reaffirmation came during high-level engagements between officials of both countries, where discussions focused on advancing cooperation in trade, infrastructure development, and broader strategic partnership. The talks also reviewed progress on existing Chinese-supported projects across key sectors of the Nigerian economy.
Speaking at the meeting, the Chinese Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Zhou Hongyou, described Nigeria as one of China’s most important partners in Africa. He highlighted the success of landmark joint projects, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port and the Lagos rail networks, noting their role in boosting economic growth and connectivity.
Both sides agreed to promote reciprocal official visits, study tours, and exposure programmes aimed at strengthening mutual understanding and long-term collaboration.
Key priority areas identified for expanded cooperation include infrastructure development, increased trade and investment—particularly Nigerian non-oil exports to China—industrial capacity building through manufacturing and energy projects, technology exchange in the digital economy and renewable energy, and deeper cultural and people-to-people relations.
As part of efforts to further strengthen ties, the Chinese Embassy announced plans to commemorate the Chinese New Year and the anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China. A media engagement has been scheduled for Tuesday February 10, 2026 to mark the occasion.
