Nigeria and Spain Strengthen Bilateral Ties

In a significant move to deepen their bilateral relations, Nigeria and Spain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations. This agreement aims to establish a mechanism for regular dialogue and cooperation between the two nations.

The MoU was signed during a working meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, José Manuel Albares, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in Madrid.

By signing the MoU, Nigeria and Spain have agreed to strengthen collaboration in economic development, including trade and investment,

In addition, the two nations will work together to address security challenges, particularly in the Sahel and West Africa regions.

Cooperation in education will be enhanced, with a focus on promoting cultural exchange and understanding.

Furthermore, Nigeria and Spain will explore opportunities for cooperation in the energy sector, including renewable energy.

The two nations have also reaffirmed their commitment to addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development, while Regional and International Cooperation have also discussed.

This includes:

  • ECOWAS: The importance of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in promoting regional stability and development was highlighted.
  • Gaza and Ukraine: The Ministers expressed their concerns regarding the situations in Gaza and Ukraine, reaffirming their commitment to peace, stability, and respect for international law.

This development marks a significant step in deepening relations between Nigeria and Spain, and is expected to promote cooperation and understanding between the two nations.
