Abuja is set to host the International Gathering in Honor of the Africans in Diaspora 6th Region, a monumental event aimed at redefining Nigeria’s global image and boosting its economy through investment and tourism
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), chaired by Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, OON, hosted a courtesy visit by a delegation of African Descendants in Diaspora from the USA and the Caribbean.
The event, held at the NIDCOM conference room on July 8, 2024, marked a significant step in strengthening ties between Nigeria and its global diaspora.
In her welcome address, Dr. Dabiri-Erewa extended a warm invitation to the delegates, acknowledging Nigeria as their ancestral homeland.
She highlighted NIDCOM’s role, established by the Nigerian government in 2019, in coordinating the affairs of Nigerians in the diaspora. The commission also focuses on the affairs of African descendants of Nigerian origin.
Dr. Dabiri-Erewa announced NIDCOM’s open hand of fellowship to Afridu, granting a Letter of No Objection and a consent letter to the Corporate Affairs Commission for the registration of the African Descendants in Diaspora Union (AFriDU) – Nigeria chapter. This registration marks a pivotal moment ahead of the October homecoming event, which will welcome over 2000 African Descendants under Afridu.
She added that the Nigerian government, under directives from the President’s office, has committed to liaising with Afridu to ensure the successful hosting of the homecoming.
Dr. Dabiri-Erewa assured the delegates of the government’s dedication to addressing the citizenship rights of African descendants.
NIDCOM, in collaboration with Afridu and the Ministry of Interior, is set to explore all possible options, with the Nigerian parliament holding the final say on such constitutional matters.
Furthermore, Dr. Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to the welfare of African Descendants globally.
She emphasized Nigeria’s role in supporting African businesses and continental development, citing the global Africa Economic Investment Summit as part of these efforts.
Nigeria’s abundant natural and human resources were highlighted as key factors making the country an ideal investment destination.
NiDCOM Boss expressed optimism about the strengthened relationship between Nigeria and its diaspora, envisioning a future of mutual growth and prosperity.
Earlier, the President of AFRIDU Archbishop Prof. Chidiebere Anelechi Ogbu, expressed that the event, inspired by Dr. Nelson Mandela’s vision of Nigeria as a pillar of African pride and confidence, seeks to position Nigeria as a world tourist destination and a pilgrimage center for the Black world.
Prof Ogbu noted that the gathering aims to attract a diverse group of African Diaspora experts, investors, professionals, scientists, entertainers, and academics.
“The event is reminiscent of the historic “FESTAC 77” and will provide an opportunity for many to visit their ancestral homes across Nigeria, fostering a significant cultural and economic exchange.”
AFRIDU (African Diaspora Union) advocated for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant a citizenship waiver to the descendants of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade victims.
“This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide reparative justice and recognize the historical injustices faced by African descendants. Granting citizenship would not only honor these individuals but also attract skilled professionals and investors, significantly benefiting Nigeria’s economy.” He added
While calling on Nigeria’s First Lady, to leverage her experience as a former senator, to host a luncheon or dinner for prominent Black women from around the world, during the event, they notified that the gathering aims to build economic ties and attract investments, further enhancing Nigeria’s global standing.
The President disclosed that a key highlight of the event will be the honoring of the African Twelve Apostles/Liberators and the launch of the African Twelve Apostles book. This initiative by AFRIDU aims to celebrate African leaders who played pivotal roles in the continent’s independence, promoting African patriotism and history.
“AFRIDU will host a Global Investment Summit, inviting African descendants worldwide to explore investment opportunities in Nigeria. This summit aims to create a favorable environment for global investments, positioning Nigeria as a prime destination for African descendants’ investments.”
“In a cultural showcase, selected African descendants will be honored with chieftaincy titles from various regions of Nigeria. This gesture will promote Nigerian culture and traditions, offering a unique experience for attendees and strengthening cultural ties.” Said the President
Prof. Ogbu expressed with delight that the gathering will create lasting respect for Nigeria and highlight its potential as a leader in Africa.
