The Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) has congratulated Comrade Alhassan Yahaya on his election as the new National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). Yahaya secured an overwhelming 436 votes during the 8th Delegates Conference in Owerri, Imo State.

According to the National President of the NGIJ, Malam Abdulrahman Aliagan, Yahaya’s election is a testament to the confidence reposed in him by journalists across the country. The NGIJ believes Yahaya is well-equipped to steer the union towards greater achievements, given his experience as NUJ Gombe State Chairman, Vice Chairman of the North-East zone, and National Deputy President.

The NGIJ has also called on the new NUJ leadership to prioritize the protection of press freedom, which is facing increasing threats in Nigeria. The union has been urged to boldly stand against the gagging of journalists, which undermines the journalism profession, democracy, and fundamental human rights.

Specifically, the NGIJ has drawn attention to the case of four journalists currently incarcerated at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for nearly two months over a cyberstalking matter. The union has been urged to demand the immediate release of these journalists.

The NGIJ has expressed confidence that Yahaya and his team will deliver a progressive and impactful tenure, and has assured the NUJ of its continued collaboration in promoting investigative journalism and defending the noble ideals of the press.
