National Sports Commission Recognizes AFFAN for Inclusion in National Sports Federations’ Boards

The National Sports Commission (NSC), has taken a remarkable step towards promoting gender inclusivity in sports governance by recognizing the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN), as a stakeholder in the governance structure of National Sports Federations (NSF).

AFFAN will be represented on the boards of national sports federations in the forthcoming elections, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to international standards and gender inclusivity.

According to a statement made available to News Dot Africa and signed by Dr. (Mrs.) Kehinde Ajayi, Director, Press
National Sports Commission (NSC), on
August 28, 2025. noted that the NSC has consistently championed inclusiveness, with three core departments currently led by outstanding women: Mrs. Mbora (Federations and Elite Athletes), Mrs. Amaka Ashiofu (Grassroots), and Mrs. Thecla Opara (Festivals & Para Sports).

The inclusion of AFFAN will tap into the wealth of knowledge, discipline, and inspiration of Nigeria’s former female athletes, enabling them to guide policies, mentor the next generation, and ensure their legacy continues in the boardroom

NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and sustainable growth in Nigerian sports. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and inclusivity in achieving national sports objectives, highlighting plans to reactivate zonal offices to identify and develop talent nationwide.

The recognition of AFFAN is expected to increase women’s representation on NSF boards, promoting global best practices and leadership opportunities for former female athletes.
In addition it will provide role models and mentorship, sustaining the legacy of excellence in Nigerian sports. and foster a culture of inclusivity, driving sports development and growth in Nigeria.
