National Commissioner and Chair, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mr Sam Olumekun is currently serving as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) while Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the substantive Chairman, attends the ECONEC meeting in Gambia. ECONEC, a network of electoral commissions within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), aims to promote cooperation and best practices in electoral management across the region.

Background of the Appointment
Olumekun’s appointment as Acting Chairman was necessitated by Yakubu’s temporary absence from the country. INEC’s leadership structure is designed to ensure continuity and stability, with commissioners like Olumekun playing key roles in the commission’s operations.

Reactions to Olumekun’s Appointment
Some Nigerians have expressed concerns about the implications of Olumekun’s appointment, with some speculating about potential shifts in the commission’s leadership. However, INEC has clarified that Olumekun is simply acting in Yakubu’s place during his absence.
