In a remarkable display of engineering expertise, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully reactivated a Dornier DO-228 aircraft that had been grounded for 23 years. This achievement showcases the NAF’s growing capacity for indigenous maintenance, bolstering its operational readiness and contributing to Nigeria’s aviation capabilities.
The aircraft, originally operated by the Ministry of Mines, Power, and Steel, was grounded at the DANA facility in Kaduna since 2001. Following a Presidential Directive, the NAF initiated the project to reactivate the aircraft, which was redesignated “NAF-039”.
A team of 5 engineering officers and 40 technicians from the NAF 431 Engineering Group conducted the reactivation process between June and September 2024. This accomplishment demonstrates the NAF’s technical expertise and determination, with significant implications for the Service’s fleet enhancement and self-reliance in aviation maintenance.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, praised the team’s dedication and emphasized the project’s importance in optimizing resources, strengthening the fleet, and upholding national security. This achievement builds upon the NAF’s earlier successes, including the first in-country 4,800-hour inspection on another DO-228 aircraft in January 2024.
The reactivated aircraft will enhance the NAF’s tactical airlift capabilities, solidifying its position as a formidable player in Africa’s aviation sector. This feat demonstrates the NAF’s commitment to operational excellence, resource optimization, and self-reliance, reaffirming its vital role in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
