The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has called on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to provide evidence or withdraw his claims that some Nigerian pilots operate aircraft under the influence of drugs. NAAPE described the allegations as “baseless” and “malicious,” emphasizing that Nigerian pilots undergo rigorous medical and professional screening.

The association has demanded that Senator Kalu substantiate his claims with verifiable evidence or issue a public apology.

NAAPE highlighted the strict regulatory standards governing Nigerian aviation, including regular drug and alcohol testing for pilots.

The association emphasized Nigeria’s strong aviation safety record, attributing it to adherence to international safety standards and continuous professional development.

According to Captain Bunmi Gindeh, President of NAAPE, “It is unacceptable to make unsubstantiated claims against a community of professionals. The burden of proof lies with whoever makes such an allegation, and it must be supported by evidence or withdrawn with a public apology.

“We take great pride in our safety record and remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism”, he concluded.
