The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to strengthen the integrity of the 2027 general elections through a two-day Anti-Corruption Education and Sensitisation Workshop for its staff.

The workshop, themed “Corruption-Free Election: Integrity Matters (C-FEIM),” opened on Monday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja and is aimed at equipping electoral officials with the knowledge and ethical standards required to deliver credible elections.
Declaring the workshop open, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, represented by National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, described the training as timely as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.

Agbamuche-Mbu said INEC, as the nation’s electoral umpire, had a responsibility to champion values that strengthen democracy, stressing that credible elections remain the foundation of democratic governance.

She warned that compromised elections erode public trust and undermine national development, adding that the workshop was designed to build staff capacity, promote best practices and develop practical recommendations to guide electoral officials during future elections.

She commended ICPC for providing resource persons for the training and urged participants to actively engage in discussions, ask critical questions and share experiences that would improve electoral processes.

Speaking at the event, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu, represented by the commission’s Director of Legal Services, Henry Emore, described corruption as one of the greatest obstacles to national development.

Emore said the workshop reflected ICPC’s commitment to supporting government efforts to ensure free, fair and transparent elections, noting that electoral malpractice often results in costly supplementary elections, heightened security challenges and increased corruption-related petitions and litigation.

He stressed that the conduct of elections demands the highest standards of accountability, transparency and responsibility, adding that the fight against corruption requires collective action by all stakeholders.

Emore also commended electoral officers for their dedication and sacrifice in carrying out their duties, expressing confidence that the workshop would contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process and promoting credible elections in 2027.
