The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has debunked the story making rounds in the social media that INEC had created secret polling units, as fake.
The Chief Press Secretary of INEC, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, disclosed this in a chat with our correspondent.
Mr Rotimi said that INEC has not added one single polling unit to the existing 119, 973 polling units (PUs), across the country, “Due to the increase in population and upsurge in the number of new settlements, INEC has also created Voting Points which are tied directly to and are within the vicinity of the existing PUs in order to give voters a pleasant voting experience during the general elections”, he explained.
He further highlighted that, “If for instance, 4,000 people have to vote at a Polling Unit, there will be long delays, voters will be on the queue for a very long time and voting can extend late into the night or even the next day.”
He noted that INEC created voting points to reduce the crowd and pressure on the existing polling units.
The CPS called on Nigerians and stakeholders to disregard and be wary of peddlers of fake news, whose only intention is to cause needless confusion.
