INEC Chairman Urges Civil Society Organizations to Monitor Party Primaries

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has called on civil society organizations to extend their monitoring efforts to party primaries, in addition to secondary elections. This appeal was made during the first regular consultative meeting with civil society organizations held at the INEC Conference Room in Abuja on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

Prof. Yakubu emphasized the importance of monitoring party primaries, citing the significance of candidates nominated by political parties being placed on the ballot paper for citizens to vote for on Election Day. He also highlighted concerns over vote-buying at polling units during elections and encouraged civil society organizations to intensify their advocacy in support of practical steps taken by security and law enforcement agencies to tackle delegate-buying by aspirants during primaries.

The meeting also discussed the Commission’s preparation for the Anambra State Governorship election, scheduled to hold on November 8, 2025, and the Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), slated for February 21, 2026. The Timetable and Schedule of Activities for both elections have been released, with party primaries for the Anambra State Governorship election set to commence on March 20, 2025, and end on April 10, 2025.
