Abuja, May 30, 2026 – The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, is leading a Nigerian delegation to the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP) taking place during South Korea’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections.
The programme, organised by the National Election Commission, commenced on May 30 in Seoul and will run until June 5, bringing together election management bodies, electoral experts, and international observers from various countries to study and exchange ideas on election administration and democratic governance.
Accompanying the INEC Chairman are National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu, Chief Technical Adviser Dimis Mai-Lafia, and Director of Training Binta Kasim Mohammed.
As part of the observation programme, the delegation monitored early voting activities at a polling centre in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, where they gained firsthand experience of South Korea’s electoral procedures and voting systems.
INEC said participation in the programme is aimed at enhancing the Commission’s understanding of emerging global trends and best practices in election management, international observation, and electoral governance. The engagement is also expected to support ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and improve the conduct of elections in the country.
The International Election Observation Programme provides a platform for collaboration among electoral bodies worldwide, fostering the exchange of knowledge and experiences that contribute to credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral processes.
