HURIWA TO PMB Act Fast, Sack Babagana Monguno

…Commends EFCC Boss

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to sack his ‘overstayed’ National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno, so as to have a clean up of the administration’s counter terrorisms strategy.

HURIWA said President Muhammadu Buhari must act fast as the Nation’s future is imminently endangered by the seemingly intractable problems of insecurity which would be professionally handled only if the President sweeps away the ‘incompetent and non performing’ national security Adviser Major General Babagana Monguno whose over five year tenure as the top security Adviser of the Federal government has misled the President miserably to a sorry state.

In a statement by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA said, “We honestly want this administration to put her act together and improve the rapidly deteriorating security fiascos in Nigeria made worse by the poor quality of security counselling that emanate from the office of the National Security Adviser”.

Besides, the Rights group has applauded the courageous steps adopted by the Young substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa to proceed with the reported prosecution of the aide of the National Security Adviser Brigadier- General Jafaru Mohammed, the director of Finance and accounts in the office of the National Security Adviser.

HURIWA recalled that the media reported that the anti-graft agency in the course of an over one-year-long investigation, discovered that General Mohammed allegedly owns an oil depot, several filling stations, shopping plazas, mansions, plots in choice areas, among other assets in key cities.

Sources further alleged that the General’s children own 90 percent of shares of Atlasfield Group of Companies and its subsidiaries, which include Gee-Links Beverages & Industries Ltd and other companies belonging to him and his family. It was discovered that 17 official accounts are linked to Mr Jafaru’s Bank Verification Number, BVN.

Brigadier General Mohammed has, however, denied these damaging allegations which HURIWA stated that if they turn out to be credible in the competent Court of law, the implication is that the National Security Adviser was really not in control of even his own office, talk more of having the presence of mind to offer top quality security guidelines to the Commander-in-chief of the Armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

HURIWA recalled that the media reported that Justice Folashade Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court, Abuja on March 9, 2021 granted an ex-parte application brought by the EFCC for an interim order of forfeiture over the identified property.

HURIWA also recalled that the EFCC, deposed to affidavits filed before the court, to get the interim forfeiture order to seize the properties, and affirmed that it acted on intelligence that Gen. Mohammed was in the habit of allegedly acquiring high-profile properties and had floated companies that owned similar assets. The Serving military General it would be recalled, has denied the allegations.

Specifically, HURIWA expressed satisfaction over the reports that the hierarchy of EFCC is proceeding with the vigorous prosecution of the top officer in the office of the National Security Adviser, just as the Rights group encouraged the EFCC head not to waiver or compromise but to adhere strictly to the PRINCIPLES OF THE RULE OF LAW.

On the rapidly expanding frontiers of insecurity in Nigeria, HURIWA advocated the appointment of a competent, thoroughbred and fresh military and /or Security expert by President Muhammadu Buhari as his National Security Adviser, to bring into operations, new sets of ideas to re-launch a successful and law-based counter terror war.

The group said the current NSA has outlived his usefulness and has absolutely run out of any sorts of workable idea to checkmate and counter the massive insecurity and instability threatening to tear down Nigeria.

“We urge President Buhari to bring an egg head and indeed a successful Military General to be his NSA so the Country can have a breathing of fresh air. For the NSA to support the undermining of the National security interest of Nigeria and the active sabotage of the counter terrorism law by the likes of the eccentric Islamic Fundamentalists preacher based in Kaduna Sheikh Gumi, this means that the National Security Adviser no longer possess what it takes to offer practical solutions to end the deterioration in the security and stability of Nigeria”, Onwubiko said.
