Following the removal of fuel subsidy and hike in the cost of petrol in Nigeria, key stakeholders in the transportation and logistics industry has called for quick development and use of auto gas as alternative fuel for transportation in Nigeria.

The Director General, Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology, Dr. Bayero Salih Farah during a one-day stakeholders engagement forum held on Tuesday, 11th of May, 2023 at NAF Conference Centre, Abuja said the decision to call for the forum is necessitated by the current transportation fuel crisis that resulted from the removal of fuel subsidy and the intention of the institute to explore alternative energy sources for the transportation sector.

“With Nigeria’s natural gas reserve at 206.53 trillion cubic feet, the country needs the technical skills and facilities to exploit this God given alternative for a more sustainable transportation sector.” Farah said

Already Nigeria has a rich gas reserve that is even yet to be tapped, he
added.

Speaking on the theme: autogas as alternative fuel for transportation in Nigeria, Bayero Farah said fuel apart from being too expensive in Nigeria at the moment with many motorists grumbling over the high cost of fuelling their vehicles, petrol-powered automobiles are no longer environmentally friendly given the carbon emission into the air. Already, many countries are phasing out fossil fuel vehicles to be replaced with clean energy vehicles like electric vehicles or those powered by liquefied natural gas or compressed natural gas. Urging Nigerians to join the clarion call and make the move to join cleaner and safe world using auto gas

The Permanent Secretary Dr Magdalene Ajani, while declaring the stakeholders engagement open, said vehicles running on Autogas emit far less of the harmful emissions associated with environmental and health problems, compared to conventional fuels

The permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation Dr Magdalene Ajani who was represented by Dr Mrs Mercy Ilori , however, lauded NITT for a timely engagement and for its consistency in enhancing efficiency in the logistics and transport sector.

She added that the gas option right now is the only veritable alternative to the sudden rise in price of PMS which is giving many motorists headache.
” Many car owners have parked their cars because of the hike and unsustainable nature of petrol”

While wishing the participants fruitful deliberations, she urged all to make useful contributions and suggestions that will support the implementation of the programme for the benefit of all.
