As the ongoing protests in Nigeria gain momentum, the Former National Association of Nigerian Students Leaders Forum (FNANSLF), has called on the government to ensure the safety of protesters by providing adequate security personnel.
In a press conference held earlier today in Abuja, the Former NANS President, Comrade Tijani Kabiru Mohammed emphasized the importance of maintaining order and preventing violence during the demonstrations.
He highlighted that with proper security measures in place, the risk of infrastructure damage could be significantly reduced.
“Providing security personnel to guide and protect protesters is crucial,” he stated.
“When security forces are present to help maintain order, the likelihood of violence decreases, and infrastructure remains intact. It is essential for the government to take proactive steps in ensuring the safety of all citizens involved in these protests.”he added
The Former NANS Leaders Forum’s call comes amid increasing concerns about the potential for clashes between protesters and law enforcement, as well as the risk of damage to public and private property.
His appeal to the government underscores the need for a balanced approach that respects the rights of protesters while safeguarding public safety.
The FNANSLF empathised with Nigerians facing economic hardship, high cost of living , inadequate and expensive healthcare services, increased transportation costs and widespread unemployment.
The Forum acknowledged the public’s right to protest, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, but expressed concerns about the timing and potential risks associated with the upcoming protest.
They further urged that the current federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, be given more time to implement programs aimed at tackling unemployment, food shortages, and infrastructural deficits.
They Warned protesters of potential hijacking of peaceful protests by anti-democratic forces, which could lead to violence and property damage, referencing past incidents where peaceful protests escalated into chaos.
The FNANSLF urged President Tinubu to expedite efforts in delivering good governance and addressing the nation’s pressing challenges, including economic prosperity, job creation, and security.
They emphasized that effective and transparent policy implementation is crucial for tangible benefits to reach all citizens.
As a medium-term solution, the FNANSLF called for a national dialogue to create a platform for the government to engage with citizens and resolve significant issues.
They proposed that their resolutions be communicated through an international press conference and disseminated across media channels.
The FNANSLF appealed to Nigerians to remain hopeful and supportive of the government’s efforts.
They reiterated their commitment to collaborating with the government and other stakeholders to ensure the dividends of democracy reach every part of Nigeria.
