FG Validates Joint Venture Outcomes with Lagos Channel Management Limited

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy (FMMBE), in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), has commenced a five-day joint working visit to Lagos Channel Management Limited (LCM) to validate the outcomes of their Joint Venture and strengthen oversight of Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure.
Leading the delegation is the Director of Maritime Services at FMMBE, Oyinloye Adeola Meshack, who will spearhead an on-site assessment of LCM’s channel management operations. The exercise is designed to evaluate operational performance, verify reported technical outputs, establish baseline data for future performance measurement, and ensure cost-effectiveness across all activities.
According to the Ministry, the validation process will enhance governance and accountability within the Joint Venture framework, while providing independent technical confirmation of dredging and maintenance works. It is also expected to support Nigeria’s broader blue economy agenda and ensure the long-term sustainability of channel management systems.
The initiative aims to establish a reliable performance baseline that will enable continuous monitoring and evaluation, ensuring that Lagos navigation channels remain safe, efficient, and capable of accommodating increasing maritime traffic.
Since the inception of the Joint Venture in 2005, LCM has played a critical role in improving the Lagos Harbour and its access channels. Its responsibilities include capital and maintenance dredging, quarterly bathymetric surveys, removal of wrecks and obstructions, installation and maintenance of navigational aids, capacity building, and environmental monitoring within the channel corridor.
Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry, Anastasia Ogbonna, said the exercise underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to transparency, performance-driven partnerships, and the sustainable development of the maritime sector.
