FG Cracks Down on Fake ‘Ambassadors,’ Warns Against Illegal Use of Diplomatic Titles

The Federal Government has issued a stern warning against the growing trend of individuals and groups fraudulently adopting and conferring diplomatic titles, particularly the designation “Ambassador,” describing the practice as illegal and punishable under Nigerian law.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 17, 2026, the government expressed concern over what it called the rising activities of “unscrupulous elements” who falsely parade themselves as diplomats or confer such titles on unsuspecting members of the public.
The Ministry highlighted several fraudulent practices, including the unauthorized use of diplomatic titles such as “Ambassador” and “Diplomatic Envoy,” the issuance of fake diplomatic passports and identity cards, and the use of counterfeit vehicle number plates bearing Nigeria’s official insignia.
It emphasized that only the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has the constitutional authority to appoint and accredit ambassadors, stressing that no individual, organization, or non-governmental body is permitted to confer such titles.
The government further clarified that ambassadorial titles cannot be obtained through financial payments or membership of any group, warning that those who present themselves as ambassadors under such circumstances are guilty of impersonation.
While acknowledging the role of “brand ambassadors” in promoting products or services, the Ministry noted that such honorary roles do not grant holders any legal right to use diplomatic titles.
The statement also revealed that the Ministry is collaborating with security agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and other relevant bodies, to identify and prosecute offenders involved in the illegal conferment or use of diplomatic status.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic system, the Federal Government vowed to take decisive action against any form of misrepresentation capable of tarnishing the country’s image.
