Former cannabis farmers in several communities in Ondo State have expressed excitement as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) commenced the distribution of fertilizers and knapsack sprayers to support their transition into legitimate agricultural activities.

The empowerment initiative took place in the communities of Ifon, Ilu-Abo, and Eleyowo, where members gathered to receive the farming inputs provided by the anti-narcotics agency as part of its alternative livelihood programme.
During the event held on Friday, March 13, 2026, NDLEA officers formally presented bags of fertilizers and knapsack sprayers to the beneficiaries, many of whom had previously engaged in illicit cannabis cultivation but have now committed to lawful farming practices.

Agricultural experts were also on ground to guide the farmers on the proper application of fertilizers and the safe and efficient use of the sprayers. The training sessions aimed at improving crop yields and ensuring that the beneficiaries are equipped with the knowledge required to sustain their new farming ventures.
Officials explained that the intervention forms part of NDLEA’s broader strategy to discourage illegal drug cultivation by providing alternative economic opportunities for affected communities.

The agency noted that empowering former illicit croppers with farming tools and training would not only improve livelihoods but also strengthen community participation in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the NDLEA for the support, describing the programme as a significant step toward helping them rebuild their livelihoods through legitimate agricultural production.

The initiative underscores NDLEA’s commitment to combining enforcement with rehabilitation and community development in its efforts to curb the cultivation and distribution of illicit drugs across Nigeria.
