DICAN Issues Retraction Over Erroneous Attribution to Belgian Envoy

The Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN), had Issued a retraction over erroneous attribution to Belgian Envoy.

In an article titled “Belgian Envoy Promises Improve Bilateral Ties With Nigeria” was due to erroneous attribution to the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt.¹

Recall that there was an incorrect attribution to a previous article and a photo of Ambassador Leenknegt that were used without authorization, leading to inaccuracies in reported statements.

DICAN has therefore apologized for any embarrassment caused and is committed to accuracy and fairness in reporting, striving to prevent similar mistakes.

Background
The article in question reported on a supposed meeting between Ambassador Leenknegt and a DICAN delegation, where he allegedly expressed disapproval of a certain political situation and criticized Nigerian journalism standards. However, these statements were not accurately represented.

A statement signed by the Chairman, Fred Idehai read in part, “DICAN values reader trust and partner confidence, taking steps to ensure high reporting standards. They appreciate understanding and cooperation from readers and partners, looking forward to providing accurate and informative reporting in the future”
