Cross River State First Lady cautions against the outbreak of anthrax

Following the confirmation of an outbreak of anthrax in Niger and Plateau States respectively by the Federal Ministry of Health, the Office of the Wife of the Governor, Cross River State, Her Excellency, Rev. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu has cautioned citizens in the State to  prevent it.

According to the release, the outbreak has been linked to contact with infected animals and has primarily affected people in these States.

It further explained that anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacteria, Bacillus anthracis, which is found in soil and can infect animals, including livestock and wildlife.

People can become infected with anthrax through contact with infected animals or their products, such as meat, hides, and bones.

The symptoms of anthrax can vary depending on how the disease is contracted. Inhalation anthrax is the most serious form of the disease and can be fatal if not treated promptly. Symptoms of inhalation anthrax can include fever, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and nausea.

It cautions that there is no specific treatment for anthrax, but the disease can be prevented with antibiotics.

Cross Riverians have been told that If anyone who thinks he or she may have been exposed to anthrax, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.
