The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has filed a strong petition with the Police Service Commission, calling for swift disciplinary action against senior police officers in Yobe State, following an alleged display of misconduct and contempt of court by officers in Potiskum.

CISLAC’s petition, led by Executive Director Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, urges accountability for actions that reportedly violated judicial authority and eroded public trust.

In an incident that qunfolded on October 29, 2024, armed officers from Potiskum Area Command allegedly stormed the Chief Magistrate Court, halting legal proceedings and creating a climate of intimidation.

The officers forcibly removed two individuals Abdulahi Aji Bulama and Mr. Kabir (A.T.O.) despite a court order mandating their detention.

CISLAC argues that this blatant defiance of judicial authority breaches the Police Act, which demands that officers uphold justice and respect the rule of law.

Highlighting a troubling pattern of disregard for legal orders, CISLAC’s petition details prior instances where Potiskum officers allegedly ignored court summons and arrest warrants.

According to CISLAC, the officers’ actions on October 29 represent a continued flouting of legal standards, undermining Nigeria’s democratic values and trust in its law enforcement.

The petition calls for the Police Service Commission to condemn the officers’ behavior publicly and to launch a thorough investigation, including disciplinary measures in line with the Police Act.

CISLAC further advocates for mandatory training on legal and ethical compliance for all officers, to prevent future breaches and restore public confidence in the justice system.

Through this petition, CISLAC seeks to reinforce the independence of Nigeria’s judiciary, calling for immediate intervention to safeguard the principles of justice and accountability essential to a democratic society.
