Attention all swimming enthusiasts and sports lovers! Get ready to witness the 2025 edition of the Chief of Naval Staff Swimming Championship, to be held from July 15th to 19th in the beautiful city of Asaba, Delta State. As the Aquatic Federation announces the hosting of this highly anticipated event, it brings forth the opportunity to showcase our nation’s best talents and prepare them for international competitions.
The Aquatic Federation’s President, Chief (Mrs) Chinoye Daphey, has expressed that this championship is the cornerstone of a strategic plan to identify, nurture, and prepare elite athletes for representing Nigeria at various international events. The African Games, World Aquatic Junior Championships, and other global competitions are just some of the prestigious platforms that our athletes will be competing in throughout the year 2025.
In a press briefing held in the Naval Headquarters in Area 7, Garki, Abuja, Mrs Daphey highlighted the tremendous progress made by Nigeria in the sport of swimming. She proudly announced that Nigeria has broken two African records in the 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle events. At the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championship in Egypt, “our team made history by securing three Gold medals and one Bronze, a remarkable milestone for Nigerian swimming”.
Mrs Daphey attributed these achievements to the unwavering support of the Chief of Naval Staff, who facilitated the release of Lieutenant Commander Labake Oriretan – a former national champion and a dedicated coach. Lieutenant Commander Oriretan’s presence and mentorship were crucial in guiding our team to victory.
Expressing her gratitude, Mrs Daphey said, “I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Chief of Naval Staff and the Nigeria Navy for their steadfast commitment to the development of Aquatic Sports in Nigeria. This partnership reflects a renewed national dedication to elevating swimming and related disciplines to international excellence.”
The upcoming championship promises to be a spectacular event, welcoming participants from all corners of the country. The Chief of Naval Staff Swimming Championship will not only be a display of exceptional talent but also a showcase of unity and sportsmanship.
