BOAT MISHAP: NIWA Condoles with Bayelsa State.

August 7, 2024, will is a dark day in the memories of the people of Bayelsa State as a day of unimaginable tragedy. A boat mishap near the Ezetu 1 community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area claimed the lives of several passengers and crew members, leaving behind a trail of grief and devastation.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), was quick to respond to the distressing news, mobilizing its search and rescue team to the scene to investigate the root cause of the accident. As the news spread, NIWA’s Managing Director expressed deepest condolences to the affected families, standing in solidarity with the Government of Bayelsa State during this difficult time.

The incident, caused by an engine default explosion, highlighted the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations for both boat operators and passengers. NIWA reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all users of the inland waterways, promising to leave no stone unturned in the investigation.

As the people of Bayelsa State mourned the loss of their loved ones, NIWA offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed. The incident served as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety on the waterways, and NIWA vowed to continue working tirelessly to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

AGM (Corporate Affairs), the NIWA led by the Managing Director/ CEO Mr Bola Oyebamiji reiterated the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations for both boat operators and passengers. “It is mandatory for all individuals using the Inland Waterways to wear life jackets at all times to ensure their safety and well-being”

“We urge all stakeholders in the maritime sector to prioritize safety measures and compliance with regulations to prevent future tragedies on the waterways”, he said
