Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri Praised for Worker-Friendly Policies

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has received accolades from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare. During the May 1st, 2025 Workers Day celebration, the labour unions praised Governor Diri for meeting several demands, showcasing his dedication to improving workers’ lives.

The Unions highlight areas of improvement by the Governor to include
– Salary Increase: 25% and 35% salary increase for mainstream civil service workers, effective May 2025, with arrears paid from January to April 2025.
– National Minimum Wage: Approval and implementation of N80,000 new national minimum wage.
– Prompt Payment: Consistent and prompt payment of monthly salaries and pensions.
– Promotion Benefits: Conduct of promotion exercise and implementation of promotion benefits for workers.
– Infrastructure Development: Completion and inauguration of NLC and TUC twin secretariat building, and commencement of a nine-storey new secretariat complex.

In delivery workers welfare and general social services, Governor Diri Initiated the following:
– Vehicle Donation: Presentation of two new buses to NLC and TUC to boost workers’ mobility and productivity.
– Support for Education: Assent to Education Officers Law on new retirement age/years of service.
– Infrastructure Projects: Construction of new legislators and commissioners quarters in Yenagoa City, with plans for civil servants quarters and low-cost houses.
Diri disclosed his future plans to include:
vehicles to be provided for permanent secretaries and more shuttle buses for the workforce and Immediate release of funds for Bayelsa Polytechnic’s relocation to Aleibiri and accreditation of its programs.
