Bangladesh High Commission in Nigeria celebrates “Martyrs’ Day” and “International Mother Language Day”

Bangladesh High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria has observed the “Martyrs’ Day” and “International Mother Language Day” in a befitting manner. The programme of the day commenced by placing floral wreath at the symbolic Shahid Minar (Martyrs’ Monument) at the High Commission by Mr. Md. Anisur Rahman, Acting High Commissioner along with the Mission’s officials, community members along with their family members. The national flag was hoisted at half-mast by the Acting High Commissioner in the premises of the Mission in presence of the Mission’s officials.

At the later part of the day, a discussion was held at the auditorium of the High Commission. The programme was started with the recitation from the Holy Quran followed by one minute-silence. Messages from the Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Prime Minister, Hon’ble Foreign Minister and Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out. During the discussion, while paying rich tribute to the language martyrs, the Acting High Commissioner said that International Mother Language Day (IMLD) has now become a day of celebration of linguistic diversity around the world. He also recalled the leadership role of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as well as the language martyrs in the historic language movement. He also underlined the significance of the language movement in the emergence of independent Bangladesh. Among others, Mr. Bidosh Chandra Barman, First Secretary and Head of Chancery of the Mission also took part in the discussion. At the end, a documentary on the “International Mother Language Day” was screened.

A special prayer was offered for the salvation of the departed souls of those who laid down their lives during the language movement in 1952 and War of Liberation in 1971 while seeking divine blessings for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country.

A number of the expatriate members of Bangladesh Diaspora attended along with their families.
