The newly appointed Director General, National Centre For Women Development, Hon. Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir took over the leadership the Centre, yesterday 12 April, 2021.
Dr Asabe who said she would leave no stone unturned as she takes over the leadership of the agency, gave a highlight of what she is meant to do as a DG hinted that her mandate and mission are very clear.
“I am here to ensure that the flag of Centre is further raised, to the top of the bar; to work towards empowering Nigerian women socially, economically and politically for sustainable national development and in line with the Act establishing the Centre. Therefore, to successfully actualize my mandate, I will leave no stone unturned; and most importantly, I will also not allow anything to interfere with this given mandate. I would appreciate the prayers, counsel, support and cooperation, of all stakeholders, within and outside the Centre, so that we can swiftly get to the “Promised Land” together; with pride and joy. I stand before you today, to declare that the National Centre for Women Development is now a “NEW BORN BABY”, therefore we must nurture it together.
“In this regard, let us stand-up together, as patriots, to further “nurture” her; to further “protect” her; and to further “develop” her together. As joint stakeholders, the Centre is one of our own avenues of contributing directly to Nigeria’s development, and the development of Nigerian women in particular”, she stated.
She said her background as an academic, lawmaker, seasoned public administrator and gender advocate, provided wealth of experience to bear, in uplifting NCWD, in her words, “so that this monumental Resource Centre, can further gain both wider national and international recognitions.
Asabe said that the Centre will further synergize and continue to collaborate with all relevant Women Organizations and stakeholders, both nationally and internationally, to ensure that the challenges hindering women emancipation and development are drastically combated.
“To achieve these goals, all hands must be on deck. We all need to continue to remain diligent and passionate with the jobs we are all employed to do. We are all here, because Government believed that we have something to offer; first, for the progress of Centre, as well as overall National Development. On my part, I will strive as much as possible, to tap all the required resources and ensure that a very friendly and progressive working environment is provided for the teeming work-force, for optimum productivity and greater results to be achieved; particularly, in the area of Internal Revenue Generation (IGR)”, she expressed.
She disclosed that her blueprint to accelerate the processes for the effective “re-structuring”, “re-positioning” and “re-branding” of the Centre will be released soon.
“I confidently assure you all, that henceforth, the Centre will by the special grace of God, begin to witness some transformations. To achieve this lofty goal, I will be working very closely with the Office of the Honourable Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, in order to ensure that we deliver; and deliver very well, in line with my vision and blueprint. The Centre will work towards consensus with all segments of society including relevant government agencies, financial institutions of which the Central Bank is key, international organizations such as the UN-Women, European Union, ECOWAS, and civil society amongst others. We will work towards deepening women’s engagement in politics especially as we head towards 2023 general elections”, she said.
The new DG was warmly welcomed by management and staff of the NCWD, Women groups, Borno State indigines, friends and family.
