The Senate has confirmed the nomination of the ex service chiefs as non career ambassadors designate.
The confirmation of the service chiefs followed the report of screening last week and submitted on the floor of Senate by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs chaired by senator Adamu Mohammed Bulkachuwa in Abuja.
Presenting the report before the plenary session presided over by the Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan sought the input of the senators on the screening exercise on the ex service chiefs as non career ambassadors before they could be confirmed.
Many senators approved the report but was however resisted by the minority leader, Senator Ennyinaya Abaribe (PDP, Abia state).
The Senator attempted to scuttle the confirmation when he raised a point of order by considering the appointment of the service chiefs as controversial.
But the Senate President ruled him out of order and thus the former service chiefs were confirmed as non career ambassadors designate.
Senator Ahmad Lawan in his closing remarks after the confirmation, called on the Executive to ensure that the ex service chiefs are utilised maximally by posting them to countries that can be beneficial to the country.
The ex service chiefs are General Abayomi Olonisakin rtd Ekiti state, Lt. General Tukur Buratai rtd Borno state, vice Admiral Ibot Ete Ibas rtd Cross River state, Air Mashal Sadique Abubakar rtd Bauchi state and Air vice Marshal Mohammed Sani Usman rtd Kano state.
