Aliagan Wins Second Term as NGIJ President in Closely Contested Election

Mallam Abdulrahman Aliagan has been re-elected President of the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ), for a second term after defeating his challenger, Bolaji Israel, by a narrow margin in a keenly contested election.

Aliagan, who is the Group Managing Editor of Time Nigeria Magazine and Orime News, polled 24 votes to edge Israel, who secured 23 votes, in the virtual election held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Announcing the results from Lagos, the Chairman of the 2026 NGIJ Electoral Committee, Mr. Lateef Owodunni, said 47 eligible voters were accredited for the election.

The election also produced other members of the NGIJ executive, including Oyelola Oyewale as Vice President, Information and Administration; Comrade James Ezema as Vice President, Investigation; Rowland Shuwa as General Secretary; and Kehinde Adeleye as Public Relations Officer.

Aliagan’s re-election gives him another term to lead the Guild, which brings together journalists engaged in investigative reporting and related professional activities.

The election was conducted virtually and witnessed a closely fought contest for the presidency, with Aliagan emerging with a one-vote advantage over his challenger.
