The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has intensified its efforts to rid the National Identity Management System of illegal enrolment activities, unauthorised data modifications and extortion, following an enforcement operation that resulted in several arrests and the recovery of illegal enrolment equipment.

The operation, conducted by the Commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU) in Gwagwalada and other locations, forms part of ongoing measures to tackle fraudulent practices and safeguard the integrity, security and credibility of Nigeria’s identity management system.

NIMC expressed concern that many challenges experienced by National Identification Number (NIN) applicants and holders arise from the use of unauthorised operators who bypass established procedures, exposing individuals to potential fraud, data compromise and other security risks.

The Commission emphasised that NIN enrolment must be carried out exclusively at NIMC-approved enrolment centres, while eligible data modification services should be accessed through its official self-service platform at www.nimc.gov.ng.

It also encouraged NIN holders to download the NINAuth application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to enhance the security of their identity information, facilitate NIN slip printing and access other identity protection features.

The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reaffirmed the Commission’s zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, misconduct and other unethical practices by individuals involved in identity management services.

She stressed that the Commission remains committed to delivering efficient, seamless and transparent NIN enrolment services to Nigerians and legal residents, while ensuring that the national identity database remains secure and reliable.

NIMC therefore urged members of the public to avoid patronising unauthorised enrolment agents and use only approved channels for all NIN-related services.

For further information and enquiries, members of the public are advised to visit www.nimc.gov.ng or follow the Commission’s verified social media platforms.

The Commission also provided its toll-free contact line, 0800 0616 462, for public enquiries and assistance.

The statement was signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Dr Kayode Adegoke, and dated October 30, 2026.
