The National Sports Commission (NSC) has secured a major development partnership with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), aimed at strengthening volleyball in Nigeria through technical assistance, funding, coaching development and grassroots programmes.

The agreement followed a high-level meeting between officials of the NSC and the FIVB in Dakar, Senegal, where both parties expressed their commitment to repositioning Nigerian volleyball and raising the country’s competitiveness at continental and international levels.

Under the proposed collaboration, the FIVB will provide technical expertise, financial support, coaching resources and other forms of assistance to accelerate the development of both indoor and beach volleyball in Nigeria.

The initiative is expected to cover critical areas, including grassroots development, talent discovery, coaching education, refereeing, competition management and improved standards for local leagues.

The partnership is particularly significant following Nigeria’s historic qualification for the Olympic Games in beach volleyball, marking the country’s first appearance in the sport at the global event.

Speaking after the meeting, the Director General of the NSC expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the discussions, describing the FIVB’s commitment as a major boost to Nigeria’s volleyball development aspirations.

He said the international body had recognised Nigeria’s potential in the sport and pledged support in technical development, funding, coaching and other essential areas.

“The meeting is quite productive. What a fruitful deliberation with the International Volleyball Federation. It gladdens my heart to know that international volleyball has seen Nigeria as one of the greatest in the game. They have offered technical support, funding, coaching and other resources that can aid the development of volleyball in Nigeria,” he said.

He added that Nigeria’s Olympic qualification had further strengthened the country’s determination to discover new talents and sustain its progress in the sport.

“Recall that Nigeria has qualified for the Olympics in Los Angeles and with this, we will keep discovering talent. We will not relent in our efforts,” he stated.

The NSC Director General assured the FIVB of the Commission’s commitment to building a sustainable partnership driven by transparency, accountability and measurable results.

He explained that the Commission would provide the necessary institutional backing and enabling environment to ensure that the collaboration translates into improved opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials and other stakeholders in the volleyball community.

According to him, volleyball remains an important sport with enormous potential to promote youth development, create employment opportunities, strengthen national unity and enhance Nigeria’s international sporting profile.

The meeting was attended by the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engineer Abu Gumel; the NOC Secretary General, Mr Tunde Popoola; and the President of the International Volleyball Federation.

The FIVB also reaffirmed its willingness to work closely with the NSC and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation to introduce development initiatives that will improve technical standards, strengthen domestic competitions and prepare Nigerian teams for major international championships.

The partnership is expected to open new opportunities for grassroots participation, professional coaching, improved competition structures and stronger performances at continental and global events.

The development represents another step in the NSC’s efforts to leverage international partnerships, technical cooperation and strategic investments to reposition Nigerian sports for sustainable growth.
