Nigeria and Cyprus have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, following the formal presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Her Excellency Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to the Cypriot President, Nikos Christodoulides.
The ceremony, held on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Cyprus, officially marked the commencement of Ambassador Ufochukwu’s diplomatic assignment to the Mediterranean island nation.
During the presentation, the Nigerian envoy conveyed the goodwill and fraternal greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to President Christodoulides, while expressing her commitment to promoting stronger relations between the two countries throughout her tenure.
The presentation of credentials represents an important step in Nigeria-Cyprus diplomatic engagement, formally authorising the ambassador to represent Nigeria and facilitate official communication between both governments.
Welcoming the Nigerian envoy, President Christodoulides described the relationship between Cyprus and Nigeria as one built on longstanding friendship, shared historical experiences, common values and enduring people-to-people connections.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.
The Cypriot President also expressed his government’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest and explore new opportunities for partnership.
He identified the economy, trade, investment, education and political dialogue as key areas where both countries could expand engagement, while collaborating to address shared challenges through bilateral and multilateral platforms.
The renewed commitment reflects a mutual desire to expand relations beyond traditional diplomatic exchanges and establish stronger economic, educational and institutional partnerships.
For Nigeria, Ambassador Ufochukwu’s accreditation to Cyprus presents an opportunity to advance the country’s diplomatic and economic interests in the Mediterranean region, with particular attention to trade promotion, investment opportunities, educational cooperation and the welfare of Nigerians living in Cyprus.
The renewed engagement is also expected to create avenues for Nigerian businesses to explore the Cypriot market, encourage greater investment flows and strengthen exchanges between academic institutions and professional communities in both countries.
Similarly, closer cooperation could provide a platform for Cypriot businesses and investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria, particularly in sectors where both countries can benefit from complementary expertise and commercial interests.
The ceremony was attended by senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.
Ambassador Ufochukwu is expected to engage relevant Cypriot government authorities, business stakeholders and members of the Nigerian community as she begins her assignment, with a view to translating the goodwill expressed at the ceremony into practical diplomatic and economic benefits.
Her presentation of Letters of Credence signals a renewed phase in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, with both countries expressing readiness to build on their longstanding friendship through mutual respect, constructive dialogue and cooperation in areas of shared interest.
