The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has explained that the planned temporary closure of the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, is necessary to carry out essential repairs and resurfacing following the deterioration of sections of the runway.

In a press release made available to News Dot Africa by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, dated October 8, 2026, FAAN announced that the closure is tentatively scheduled to commence on October 20 and last approximately 25 days, subject to final confirmation.

The authority attributed the deterioration to potholes and extensive surface cracks, which it said had been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.

According to FAAN, the planned rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.

The intervention is also intended to prepare the airport for the anticipated increase in passenger traffic and flight operations during the Christmas season.

Beyond the repairs, FAAN disclosed that the project would include runway extension to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region increases.

The authority said the expansion was designed to improve passenger comfort and facilitate a more seamless travel experience.

FAAN has advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.

It added that relevant stakeholders would be kept informed, with the confirmed closure and reopening dates to be communicated once finalised.

The authority appealed for the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines and other airport users, reaffirming its commitment to safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
