Suspected gunmen on Monday night attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, killing two soldiers and a police officer before security personnel successfully repelled the assault.
The attack, which reportedly began around 11:00 p.m. on June 15, targeted Nigeria’s premier policy and strategic studies institute, where senior government officials, military officers and other top participants are currently undergoing training.
According to sources, the attackers attempted to gain access to the institute’s residential quarters housing participants. However, security operatives stationed at the facility mounted a swift response, preventing the assailants from breaching the area.
The police officer killed in the attack was said to be attached as an orderly to a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, while the two soldiers lost their lives during the exchange of gunfire with the attackers.
Despite the deadly assault, no participant was abducted and the institute’s facilities remained secure.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NIPSS confirmed that a security incident occurred in the vicinity of the institute in the early hours of the day.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies,” said Dr. Osime Samuel, Head of Public Affairs at the institute.
He assured participants, staff and residents that there was no threat to their safety, adding that normal activities at the institute were continuing as scheduled.
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement said.
NIPSS also cautioned against speculation, noting that investigations into the incident were ongoing and that it would be premature to draw conclusions regarding the nature or motive of the attack.
Security has since been reinforced around the institute, while security agencies have reportedly launched a manhunt for the attackers.
The incident has raised concerns over the security of strategic national institutions, particularly as NIPSS remains one of Nigeria’s most important centres for policy development, leadership training and strategic research. Authorities are yet to officially disclose the motive behind the attack.
