ABUJA — President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Ahmadu Musa Kida, has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful, united, and actively engaged in nation-building as the country marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a message commemorating June 12, Kida, who is also Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), described the day as a symbol of the courage, sacrifices, and resilience of Nigerians who fought for justice, freedom, and democratic governance.
He noted that Democracy Day is more than a date on the national calendar, stressing that it represents a hard-earned victory achieved through sacrifice, sustained by hope, and strengthened by the determination of citizens who believed in a better Nigeria.
Reflecting on the country’s democratic journey, Kida said the true strength of a nation lies in the character, unity, and aspirations of its people rather than its natural resources or institutions. He emphasized that despite differences in ethnicity, religion, language, and political affiliation, Nigerians remain united by a shared destiny and belief in the country’s potential.
The NBBF president particularly encouraged young Nigerians to remain optimistic and contribute meaningfully to national development, noting that while the nation faces significant challenges, they are not insurmountable.
“The challenges before us are real, but they are not greater than the determination, creativity, and resilience that define the Nigerian spirit,” he said.
Drawing lessons from sports, Kida said basketball and other sporting activities have consistently demonstrated the power of unity and teamwork in achieving success. According to him, victories are secured through discipline, sacrifice, and collective effort rather than individual brilliance alone.
He also commended Nigerians working across various sectors of the economy, saying their dedication continues to drive national growth and development.
Kida urged citizens to see democracy as a shared responsibility that extends beyond elected leaders, calling for greater commitment to accountability, peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and confidence in democratic institutions.
He further appealed to Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to recommit themselves to building a nation where opportunities are accessible to all, hard work is rewarded, and unity prevails over division.
“The story of Nigeria is still being written. It is a story of courage, perseverance, and endless possibilities. Together, let us write a chapter that future generations will look back on with pride,” he stated.
Kida concluded by paying tribute to the nation’s democratic heroes and expressing hope for a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous Nigeria.
