The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has commenced a full-scale investigation into the collision involving the container vessel MV Maersk Valparaiso and the oil tanker MT Lady Martina at Bonny Anchorage in Rivers State, classifying the incident as a Very Serious Marine Casualty.

According to the statement signed by Mrs. Funke Adebayo-Arowojobe, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, the marine accident occurred on May 20, 2026, prompting the immediate activation of its marine occurrence response protocols. An NSIB investigation team was subsequently deployed to Onne and Bonny on May 22 to preserve evidence and begin preliminary investigative activities.

As part of the initial inquiry, investigators boarded both vessels, conducted interviews with the Masters and key crew members, and secured operational records and navigational data relevant to the casualty.

The NSIB disclosed that critical information from the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) and the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) aboard MV Maersk Valparaiso has been successfully downloaded for detailed forensic and navigational analysis.

In line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Casualty Investigation Code and international obligations, the Bureau has formally notified the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) of Singapore as a substantially interested State and has initiated collaboration with local and international stakeholders.

The Bureau emphasized that the investigation is being conducted independently and professionally, with the primary objective of determining the causal and contributory factors behind the collision and enhancing maritime safety.

NSIB urged the public and stakeholders to avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing, noting that it is too early to determine the probable cause of the incident.

The Bureau further stated that should any urgent safety concerns emerge during the investigation, immediate safety recommendations would be issued to prevent similar occurrences and strengthen maritime safety standards.

The final investigation report will be released upon completion of the inquiry in accordance with national regulations and international obligations.
