The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has intensified efforts to tackle vandalism and strengthen the protection of critical power infrastructure following a strategic meeting with the Office of the National Security Adviser held on Wednesday.

The meeting, which took place during a courtesy visit by the ONSA delegation to NERC, focused on enhancing inter-agency collaboration and improving security across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Welcoming the delegation, NERC Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni commended ONSA for its continued role in safeguarding national power assets, stressing that stronger cooperation between both institutions is vital to addressing the growing threat of vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure nationwide.

Oseni noted that sustained synergy between NERC and security agencies would help protect critical electricity assets and improve the reliability and stability of power supply across the country.
“We must continue to strengthen collaboration in order to effectively secure critical electricity infrastructure and address the increasing incidents of vandalism affecting the sector,” he said.
Also speaking during the meeting, the Director of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection at ONSA, AVM Enebong Effiom emphasized the need for closer cooperation among stakeholders in safeguarding strategic assets within the power sector.

The meeting produced several key resolutions aimed at improving security coordination and response mechanisms within the electricity industry.

Among the major outcomes was the planned establishment of a joint stakeholders’ forum to combat vandalism and other criminal activities targeting power installations.

Both agencies also agreed to develop a shared database containing information on electricity assets, vandalism incidents, and infraction reports to enable better threat assessment and coordinated response.

In addition, plans were unveiled for the creation of a dedicated reporting platform designed to facilitate timely incident reporting, accelerate arrests, and support the prosecution of offenders involved in attacks on electricity infrastructure.

The renewed partnership is expected to bolster efforts to secure Nigeria’s power network and reduce disruptions caused by vandalism and sabotage.
