Nigeria Congratulates Hungary’s New Prime Minister, Reaffirms Bilateral Ties

The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated Hungary’s newly inaugurated Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, following his swearing-in ceremony held at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest on May 9, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, also congratulated the Tisza Party on its victory in the April 12, 2026 parliamentary elections.

Nigeria described the political transition in Hungary as a significant development in the country’s democratic journey, noting that it reflects the enduring value of democratic participation, constitutional governance, and peaceful political transition in strengthening national institutions and public confidence.

The ministry stated that Nigeria and Hungary have continued to maintain cordial diplomatic relations built on mutual respect, constructive engagement, and shared commitment to international cooperation.

According to the statement, both countries have strengthened bilateral cooperation in education, agriculture, trade and investment, science and technology, energy, and capacity development. Nigeria also acknowledged Hungary’s scholarship and educational exchange programmes for contributing to stronger people-to-people relations between both nations.

The Federal Government further welcomed Prime Minister Magyar’s commitment to deepening Hungary’s engagement within Europe and promoting democratic governance, regional stability, and economic development.

Nigeria reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the new Hungarian administration to advance bilateral cooperation and shared interests within multilateral institutions, including the United Nations.

The statement added that Nigeria wishes Prime Minister Magyar and the Government of Hungary success in their new responsibilities while expressing hope for continued peace, stability, and prosperity for the Hungarian people.
