Former Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Omatseye Nesiama, has secured another major continental assignment after being selected for the prestigious World Athletics and Confederation of African Athletics mentoring programme for referees ahead of the 2026 African Championships in Accra, Ghana.
Nesiama, a retired military officer and respected athletics technical expert, will participate in the elite programme during the championships scheduled to hold from May 10 to 19. His selection is being viewed as further recognition of Nigeria’s growing profile in athletics officiating and technical administration across the continent.
According to an official invitation jointly issued by World Athletics and the Confederation of African Athletics, the initiative is designed to strengthen the capacity of technical officials through practical exposure, education sessions and hands-on mentoring at one of Africa’s biggest athletics events.
The programme will feature the participation of a World Athletics Gold Referee, who will mentor participants in key areas including competition preparation, organisation and event delivery.
As part of the arrangement, World Athletics will sponsor Nesiama’s international flight ticket, while the Confederation of African Athletics will provide accommodation throughout his stay in Ghana.
The former AFN Technical Director is expected to play an active role during the championships while taking part in specialised mentoring and educational sessions alongside other experienced officials from across Africa.
Nesiama’s latest continental assignment comes shortly after he officiated at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, further strengthening his growing reputation within global athletics officiating circles.
His appointment is also expected to enhance Nigeria’s standing in international athletics administration at a time African athletics continues to improve its technical and organisational standards in line with global best practices.
The development has been welcomed within Nigerian athletics circles as another milestone for one of the country’s most respected track and field administrators, whose contributions have played a significant role in the growth of athletics in Nigeria over the years.
