NOC to Mark 2026 Olympic Day June 27, Seeks Nationwide Participation

Abuja, April 7, 2026 — The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), has announced plans to commemorate the 2026 Olympic Day on Saturday, June 27, with activities aimed at promoting fitness, unity, and healthy living across the country
A press release signed by ny to Tony Nezianya, the Public Relations Officer, NOC, the event will be organised under the global framework of Olympic Solidarity, the annual event will be driven locally by the NOC in collaboration with its Sport-For-All Commission. Olympic Day is a worldwide initiative designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to embrace physical activity while promoting the core Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
Speaking ahead of the event, Chairman of the NOC Sport-For-All Commission, Dr Abdul Ibrahim, said the 2026 edition will focus on inclusivity and the shared joy of movement. He stressed that exercising becomes more impactful when done collectively, urging Nigerians to involve friends, family members, and colleagues in the initiative.
According to him, simple activities such as jogging and walking remain effective ways to improve physical and mental health, helping to burn calories, strengthen muscles, and reduce stress.
Following what it described as record-breaking participation in 2025, the committee has dispatched invitation letters to all states of the federation, calling on State Sports Councils to begin early preparations for a successful and far-reaching celebration.
Also commenting, NOC President, Habu Ahmed Gumel, said this year’s event aims to bridge generational gaps by using sports and physical activity to foster stronger connections between young and older Nigerians.
The NOC further called on corporate organisations and philanthropists to support the initiative through funding and partnerships. It noted that such collaboration would not only boost public health outcomes but also offer partners increased brand visibility and alignment with a nationwide campaign promoting unity and wellness.
Olympic Day is celebrated annually around the world as part of efforts by the Olympic Movement to inspire active lifestyles and social cohesion.
