Abuja, April 1, 2026 — Team Nigeria’s athletics squad is set for a decisive test of strength, speed, and coordination as it heads to Botswana for the National Trials scheduled from April 3 to 5, with a clear objective of increasing its qualification slots for the World Athletics Relays 2026.
Nigeria has already secured qualification in four relay events — women’s 4x100m, women’s 4x400m, mixed 4x100m, and men’s 4x400m — but officials say the Botswana outing presents a vital opportunity to expand that tally while refining team combinations ahead of the global showdown in May.

Under the supervision of AFN Technical Director Gabriel Okon, the athletes have maintained high spirits in camp, focusing on baton exchange efficiency and race strategies critical to relay success.

The trials coincide with the Botswana Athletics National Championships, which will be held at the National Stadium and serve as Botswana’s final relay selection event. This dual significance is expected to heighten competition, particularly with home athletes eager to impress.

Leading the charge for the host nation is sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo, who headlines a formidable men’s 4x400m relay squad alongside Bayapo Ndori and Collen Kebinatshipi. Their performance on home soil is anticipated to set the tone for Botswana’s relay ambitions.

In the middle-distance events, Tshepiso Masalela and Kemorena Tisang are expected to deliver standout performances, while the women’s category will feature strong contenders such as Same Mohutsiwa and Naledi Monthe.

Acting President of the Botswana Athletics Association, Oabona Theetso, expressed optimism about the championship, noting that improved scheduling this year has enabled top athletes to participate without conflicts from European competitions.

With both Nigeria and Botswana fielding strong squads, the trials are shaping up to be more than a routine selection exercise. For Team Nigeria, it represents a critical dress rehearsal — one that could deliver momentum, confidence, and additional qualification tickets as the countdown to the World Relays intensifies.
