REC GOMBE ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS ON PHASE II OF THE CVR
Oru Leonard
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Gombe State, Dr. Saad Umar Idris, on Thursday met with stakeholders in the State to review Phase I and outline plans for Phase II of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), including the devolution of registration to Registration Areas (RAs) on a rotational basis.
Speaking at the stakeholders’ meeting held at the Gombe International Hotel, Dr. Idris disclosed that the State recorded 36,638 new voter registrations during Phase I, with female registrants surpassing males for the first time. He noted that despite improvements, Gombe’s registration figures remain low compared to other northern states, and called for stronger mobilisation by political parties, CSOs, religious and traditional leaders, the media, and security agencies.
The REC announced that, in response to stakeholders’ earlier appeals, INEC has approved the rotation of Voter Enrolment Devices (IVEDs) across the State’s 114 Registration Areas for 50 days beginning 2 February 2026, to bring the registration closer to the grassroots. He cautioned against multiple registrations, stressing that it is an offence and counterproductive.
Earlier in the week, Dr. Idris had met with staff of the State Office on Tuesday, 27 January, and with Electoral Officers from the 11 Local Government Areas on Wednesday, 28 January, to fine-tune operational plans for Phase II. He assured all stakeholders of the Commission’s commitment to a credible, inclusive and transparent voter registration process.
