“HURIWA’s Premature Accusations: Let Prof. Amupitan Focus on Delivering Credible Elections”
Oru Leonard
HURIWA’s accusations against INEC, Wike, and the APC seem premature and might be distracting Prof. Amupitan, who’s barely 2 months and 2 weeks into office. INEC’s decision to reject the Turaki-led PDP NWC is based on subsisting court judgments, which is a standard procedure. Prof. Amupitan has emphasized electoral credibility and transparency, and it’s crucial to let him work without undue pressure.
HURIWA’s concerns about INEC’s independence are valid, but it is also important to respect the commission’s autonomy and allow it to make decisions based on the law. Rather than accusing INEC of plotting against the PDP, it might be more productive to engage in constructive dialogue and ensure the electoral commission has the necessary support to conduct free and fair elections.
Prof. Joash Amupitan, the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has outlined plans to reform Nigeria’s electoral system, strengthen institutional independence, and rebuild public trust in the commission. Some of his key priorities include:
– Electoral Reforms: Reviewing the Electoral Act to close loopholes and enhance credibility and consistency of election timelines
– Infrastructure Development: Improving infrastructure and deploying technology to enhance transparency, credibility, and inclusiveness
– Voter Education: Conducting nationwide voter education to inform and engage citizens
– Logistics and Security: Addressing logistics challenges and collaborating with security agencies to ensure peaceful elections
– Transparency and Accountability: Promoting transparency and accountability in the electoral process
Regarding HURIWA’s accusations, the group has expressed concerns about INEC’s independence and the potential undermining of opposition parties.
However, Prof. Amupitan has emphasized his commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.
