NSC, Aquatic Federation Discover New Swimming Talents at Youth Gamesl

The National Sports Commission (NSC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Aquatic Federation, has discovered a fresh wave of swimming talents at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
Eighteen states showcased their skills in swimming, with 12 eventually winning medals. Lagos State emerged overall winner with 19 gold and 4 silver medals (23 total), followed by Edo State with 10 medals (3 gold, 3 silver, 4 bronze), while Delta State placed third with 17 medals (2 gold, 10 silver, 5 bronze).
The NSC leadership described the swimming competition as “a true celebration of youth sports and a testament to Nigeria’s talent pipeline.” The Commission stressed that the Games remain a critical platform for identifying and nurturing young athletes who can represent Nigeria on the global stage.
President, Nigeria Aquatic Federation, Chief (Mrs.) Chinonye Daphey Aliyu, noted that the Youth Games continue to play a vital role in grooming future Olympians. She highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for youth sports development, assuring that the Federation is committed to tracking, training, and preparing discovered talents for international competitions, including the upcoming Youth Olympics in Senegal.
The NSC commended Delta State for providing world-class facilities and a conducive environment for the athletes, urging other states to emulate Asaba’s example in hosting successful grassroots competitions.
With the outstanding performances recorded, both the NSC and the Aquatic Federation expressed confidence that Nigeria’s swimming prospects are bright and that many of the young stars discovered will soon make their mark internationally.
