Imo Monarch demands Government action as 22-year-old abandoned Road threatenes to cut off Okwuohia Community
The people of Okwuohia Autonomous Community in Obowo LGA have issued a passionate cry for help as their only access road, the Umulogho–Okwuohia–Isinweke road, remains abandoned 22 years after the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), first awarded its construction.
In a letter dated 26th August 2025, His Royal Highness, Eze Sir Dr. Uwajimogu Louis Chukwuemeka, Okwu II of Okwuohia Ancient Kingdom, described the situation as “heart-breaking and devastating,” warning that the abandoned road has now become a major threat to education, agriculture, and economic survival in the community.
The monarch revealed that the project was abandoned immediately after excavation works in 2003, leaving behind a death trap riddled with erosion gullies, flooding points, and severe soil degradation.
“Our children are being forced out of schools, farmers cannot transport their produce, and businesses are dying daily. Okwuohia is on the verge of being completely cut off from Imo State if urgent government action is not taken,” the royal father declared.
The road, according to him, is the only link connecting Okwuohia to Umulogho, the Obowo Local Government headquarters at Otoko, and neighboring Isinweke. Its collapse has isolated the community, stalling development and worsening rural poverty.
The monarch appealed directly to the Managing Director of NDDC, urging the Commission to demonstrate responsiveness by mobilizing contractors back to site without further delay.
“It is a matter of life and survival for our people. The government cannot continue to abandon Okwuohia. We demand urgent intervention before erosion swallows what is left of our community,” he added.
The Okwuohia Development Union (ODU) has also thrown its weight behind the royal appeal, warning that government silence over the project could deepen distrust between rural communities and state institutions.
The call is clear: Okwuohia is demanding action, not promises.
